Medisafe alternatives for families caring for an aging parent
Medisafe is one of the most widely used medication reminder apps, and for many people it's a good choice. This page is for a narrower situation: you're the adult child or spouse trying to keep track of someone else's medications, often from another house.
Written by the team behind Pillybot, so read it with that in mind. We've tried to be fair.
Features and pricing change, so check each app's store listing before deciding.
What Medisafe does well
- Reliable reminders on the patient's phone, with a dose log.
- Medfriend: a family member can be told when a dose is missed, and can see the log.
- Pill photos so similar-looking tablets are easier to tell apart, plus health measurements.
- Native iOS and Android apps. Some features have moved to a paid tier, so check current pricing in the app store.
Where families run into limits
- A tap is self-reported. The log shows someone pressed “taken”. With memory loss, that's exactly what can't be relied on.
- The patient runs the app. Set-up and day-to-day use sit with the person taking the medicine, and caregivers mainly observe.
- Typing in every medicine is slow when a parent has eight bottles and three changed after a hospital stay.
Alternatives worth considering
| Option | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in phone reminders | One or two medicines, a person who's organized | No record for family, no escalation |
| Pharmacy blister packs | Many medicines, filling mistakes | Silent when a dose is missed |
| Automated dispensers | Double-dose risk, needing doses locked away | Cost and set-up; tracks the tray, not the swallow |
| Caregiver-first apps (such as Pillybot) | Family managing a parent's routine remotely | Newer, smaller products; check they fit your parent's device |
How Pillybot is different, and where it isn't
- Built for the caregiver to set up. Photograph the prescription labels (from your own account, for a parent who has accepted your link) and Pillybot drafts the schedule for you to check.
- Checks the pill, not just the tap. Your parent can photograph the pill at dose time and Pillybot checks it against the schedule. When it isn't sure, it says so rather than guessing.
- The whole family on one record, with missed-dose alerts and a printable report for doctor visits.
- Where it's not the pick: it runs in the web browser rather than as a native app, it's new and built by a small team, and if you're managing your own medicines, a mature app like Medisafe may suit you better.
Try the caregiver-first option
Free during early access. Set up a parent's medicines from photos and see the same record they do.
Free during early access. No card. Works in the browser on the phone you already have.
General information only, not medical advice. Pillybot is a reminder and record-keeping tool, not a medical device. Medication changes belong to the prescriber and pharmacist.
